I was talking to an old colleague who was querying me about best practices for using AppSense Performance Manager alongside Citrix streamed applications. I’d never actually tried using these two technologies together before, and when I did a bit of a Google search, there was very little information available to point me in the direction of any configuration changes or gotchas. However, I was about to learn a very important lesson – to RTFM. Once I’d lost faith in Google, I found myself reading the Performance Manager Product Guide, where there was a section on configuring Citrix streamed apps to work with “certain elements” of Performance Manager. There was no hint given as to what the “certain elements” were, but it seemed as if this was the kind of thing my old colleague was looking for.
The following is lifted straight from the Performance Manager Product Guide, so hopefully I am not infringing anyone’s copyright. I just thought I’d make things a little easier for idiots like myself who go running to Google before they actually have a look through the product documentation 🙂
To set up Citrix XenApp streaming applications to work with certain elements of Performance Manager you need to specify some exclusions, as follows:
1. Navigate to Citrix Streaming Profiler for Windows.
2. Open the Application Profile for your target application
3. Highlight the relevant Target and select the Edit menu.
4. Select Target Properties. The Target Properties screen displays.
5. Select Rules. The Rules work area displays on the right hand side.
6. Click Add in the Rules work area. The New Rule Select Action and Objects dialog box displays.
7. In the Action section leave the default setting as Ignore.
8. In the Object section select Named Objects and click Next. The New Rule Select Objects dialog box displays.
9. Select Some Named Objects and click Add. The Choose Named Object dialog box displays.
10. Add \??\pipe\AppSense* and click OK. This displays in Named Objects on the New Rule Select Objects dialog box.
11. Click Next to display the New Rule Name Rule dialog box.
12. Enter a name for the rule or accept the default and click Finish.
13. Click OK. The Target Properties screen re-displays and the Ignore all named objects rule is now listed in the work area on the right hand side.
14. Save the profile.
15. Repeat for each application profile as required.
