Retaining Windows Gadgets in AppSense Environment Manager

Posted by HTG

Similar to Pinned Items and Jump Lists, the Windows Gadgets available in Vista upwards are another feature that users find invaluable. And like the others, when you configure your users to use profiles that are discarded at logoff (such as mandatory profiles or emulated temporary profiles), you may find that these features users like aren’t saved by Environment Manager.

Fortunately, the solution is also very straightforward. In User Personalization in Environment Manager, you need to create an application for sidebar.exe. In Personalization Server, expand the Applications node, expand Application Categories, right-click User and choose Add Application. Fill the details in as shown in the image below

Click OK, and then highlight the application you have just defined in the right-hand pane of the console. At the bottom of the screen, click on the Folders tab, and right-click in a blank area before choosing Add path.

Add the following folder to the dialog box – {CSIDL_LOCAL_APPDATA}\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar

Next simply select the target Personalization Group, select the Whitelists tab, right-click in the Whitelist Applications area and select Add Application. Select the sidebar.exe application and click OK

Once this is done, the users in the selected Personalization Group should now start having their Windows Gadgets saved by User Personalization.
