Identifying device type and operating system in AppSense

Posted by HTG

After my piece on identifying iPads and iPhones I was informed that there’s a much more scientific way you can identify the endpoint device and operating system using AppSense – as long as you’re using Citrix. Well actually it depends on the Citrix PowerShell commands, but I don’t know whether you can fire these up without having some flavour of the Citrix software line installed somewhere.

Rather than just reproduce someone else’s work here I’ll simply link to Rob Dobson’s article from the AppSense blog – http://blog.appsense.com/2012/04/contextual-dynamic-citrix-xenapp-policies-based-on-connecting-client-os-andor-device-type-with-appsense/. I’m working on some example configurations at the moment so I’m going to incorporate a lot of device type and operating system detection into that, but until I get those finished Rob’s article should give you what you need to do a bit more of a precise detection than the “name plus resolution” method we discussed in my piece on iPads and iPhones.
